Plummeting paper profits poses problem for pooping puppies
Image: The Andrew Blog |
That's the problem animal shelters face in San Francisco. Animal Care and Control has been relying on donations of the San Francisco Chronicle and other newspapers to line the cages of un-housebroken puppies, and paper supplies are dwindling. The San Francisco Public Library has promised to donate old newspapers, but it remains to be seen if this will solve the problem.
It is rather unfortunate that newspapers are becoming more scarce when people actually have a need for them.

If what J. J. Abrams did for the dying Star Trek franchise is any indication, then reports that he will direct the next Star Wars film is great news.

The U.S. debt ceiling represented with $100 bills
The current U.S. debt is $16.394 and growing. Don't think it's a big deal? The U.S. GDP is $15.09 trillion. Do the math.
Unfortunately, words like "trillion" have little or no meaning to mere mortals. That's where infographics come in. Here, the national debt is represented with stacks of $100 bills:
If you think that's scary, click here and scroll down to see what $122.1 trillion in unfunded government liabilities looks like.

School locked down for hours due to Nerf gun threat
In the aftermath of any tragic shooting, you can expect to see stories like this:
Yet another reason I'm glad we educate our kids at home, where our Nerf guns remain loaded and accessible at all times.

Man playing Wagner on the trombone while skiing downhill
Playing the trombone is difficult. Playing "Ride of the Valkyries" on the trombone is even tougher. Playing "Ride of the Valkyries" on the trombone while downhill skiing is, well, no less than impressive.

Giant squid captured on video for the first time ever
Known as the kraken in maritime folklore, giant squid were once relegated to the realm of cryptozoology. Up until the 21st century, not one had ever been photographed alive. And up until last summer, a giant squid had never been captured on video in its natural habitat.

Warm up this winter with hot Dr. Pepper
I didn't realize there was once an entire ad campaign centered around selling Dr. Pepper as a hot beverage. Makes me wonder why more soft drink companies didn't try this.
While most people probably haven't even heard of hot Dr. Pepper, the recipe is still included on the FAQ page on the Dr. Pepper web site.
